I was there when Barack Obama claimed the DFL nomination. This opportunity is the one good thing that has resulted from the Republican National Convention coming to St. Paul later this year.
What an amazing turnout for his speech! Myself,
blacksqurriel,
vulchu,
cendalire,
mattmn,
spacevlad, and some of my coworkers booked it over to the Xcel Energy Center immediately after work yesterday to get a place in line with the 20,000 other people.
Here is what the final 1.5 mile line looked like, by the way.We were about halfway through it when we got there, between St. Peter and Wabasha, thanks to the efforts of
vulchu who got there earlier than most of us and actually FOUND the end of the line. That was followed by an adventure through downtown trying to find a sub shop that didn't have a line out the door and that wasn't out of bread. We found one with a line that was inside the door at least.
As the line slowly started to file into the building, we passed a bar where we could see CNN reporting Obama had only 4 delegates to go. When we got inside and seated, it was a done deal.
The speech itself only lasted about a half hour or 45 minutes. Would probably have been about 15 if every other sentence hadn't resulted in crazy cheering and yelling. I would have liked to hear something a little more substantial, but the context dictated that this was going to be short, sweet, and about claiming the nomination more than anything. And anyway, there will be plenty of time for more during the general election. I look forward to it.
Now the real fight gets started and I plan to do everything I can to make sure this happens in November.
Also, GIP. Because they fight crime. (lol)
